Laodicea

Laodicea was the chief city of the wealthy province of Phrygia. It was situated on the major east—west trade route.

The city had a large number of banks and was widely known not only for its vast wealth but also for clothes and carpets.

Laodicea was home to medical school, which produced an eye salve.

For all its wealth and prominence, Laodicea lacked one vital resource: water. Water was piped in from hot springs much further south and arrived lukewarm after traveling the distance in store pipes.

Laodicea was destroyed in AD by a devastating earthquake. It was reconstructed from people's vast wealth.
